“…humanity which is revealed in all its intellectual splendour during the sweet and tender age of childhood should be respected with a kind of religious veneration. It is like the sun which appears at dawn or a flower just beginning to bloom. Education cannot be effective unless it helps a child to open up himself to life.”

The Montessori philosophy was developed by Dr Maria Montessori (1870-1952. Maria Montessori started her work with children with intellectual disabilities; under her guidance these children who were deemed ‘uneducable’ sat regular school examinations with incredible results. From here, Montessori decided to apply her approach to children of ‘normal abilities’.

Montessori also applied her approach to children from the slums of Rome and created an environment that enabled the children to reach their full potential and develop independence and thus the prepared environment was born.
