Practical life consists of the daily activities we do in order to take care of ourselves, the environment and of others. Developing respect for self, others and the environment is the foundation of Montessori.
Giving children permission to participate in purposeful activities and make a contribution to their community instils a sense of pride, ownership and accomplishment resulting in a sense of self worth.
Practical life exercises are a major part of the Montessori ‘work cycle’ and whilst as adults we may rush through household chores, young children take great pride and pleasure in mastering these daily tasks, providing they have the right sized tools to succeed.
Practical life exercises may include; baking, cloth washing, dish washing, window washing, seed germinating, cutting herbs, flower arranging.
In a Montessori environment you find that each practical life exercise supports a cycle of work e.g. baking bread creates dishes that require washing etc.
